Our Process.

When we started Joseph Henry 1895 we were inspired by family stories and old, used, worn and loved pieces that can always be found in one's home, being passed from one generation to another, intrinsically connecting people to the past. We knew that we wanted to work with waxed canvas and leather to create vintage inspired items that, may be, one day would become such heirlooms of the future.

Our Apothecary line started as Medicine River Soap Company back in April of 2013 with the idea to make all natural handcrafted soap the traditional way. The goal was to only include all natural, healthy and simple ingredients that would not only make your skin clean with lots of wonderful lather and also be good for it. Our combination of rich butters, clays, botanicals, oils and essential oils benefits your skin thanks to its natural qualities helping with dry climate, pollution, sensitivity and more.
Since 2013 we grew and added skincare, beard grooming products, hand-dipped and hand-poured beeswax candles to our line.
All our apothecary products are handcrafted from start to finish in really small batches, hand cut and wrapped by our family. They do not contain any artificial  colors or fragrances, chemicals or preservatives. We love using Kicking Horse Bear Claw Coffee in our coffee soaps, Blacksmith Black Ale from Village Brewery in our shaving bar, locally sourced Alberta beeswax and herbs grown in our garden.

To craft our bags we use premium field tan waxed canvas fabric in its traditional natural earth-toned color and vegetable tanned leather. These are tough and durable materials that will change over time, developing its own personality and patina while accompanying you in all your adventures. The bags are then finished with solid brass and iron hardware, and heavy duty YKK zippers. Our leather finishes are natural and carefully selected for both our health and the beautiful look they create.

We strive to use best quality materials available to us to create vintage inspired goods for you and your families. We are makers. We are forever in love with things that breath heritage, community and sense of adventure. By buying our products you are not only supporting us but many other family businesses, who either sell our creations or supply us with materials.
